About

I remember baking my first cake when I was 5 years old. A marbled tea cake appropriately called “Zebra”. For me it was all about the swirls of vanilla and chocolate batter. I would bake it countless times purely for the opportunity to spoon the monochromatic liquids, alternating their order. As soon as the last bit of uncooked dough was used up, I lost almost all interest in the process. After that, it was a waiting game until the cake was eaten indicating that I can start over. I anticipated blending all the ingredients, leading up to where the mixture needed to be equally divided into two. Stirring the cocoa into one part and watching it turn brown was like my own science experiment. Observing the two-tone patterns develop in the center of the pan was fascinating. When the novelty wore off, I divided the same batter into 5 and applied food colours. I might have created the first unicorn rainbow cake without even realising it.
